Teeth Whitening
More and more people are enjoying a brighter smile thanks to teeth whitening treatments. It is one of the most popular forms of cosmetic dentistry.
Whitening is a process where the discolouration is ‘whitened’ to a lighter shade. It removes the staining agent through chemical means. It is a safe procedure when carried out under professional supervision. Treatment results usually depend on the severity of the discolouration. Both vital (ie live) and non-vital teeth (eg tooth with nerve removed) can be bleached and usually take only one visit. You will also receive a home whitening kit to follow up the treatment, and further supplies of the whitening gel can be bought separately.
Teeth can discolour for various reasons. Our dentists will recommend the most ideal method based on your oral condition after an examination to establish the cause and nature of your teeth discolouration, as well as provide you with more information. It is not effective on dental restorations such as amalgam fillings, metal or porcelain crowns, etc.
The animation on this page gives a general description of the teeth whitening treatment we offer in the surgery. You can also opt for home whitening, but we will suggest the one best suited to you.
Remember, talk to us if you are going to have a new porcelain crown or veneer and you are interested in teeth whitening. Your dentist will then match it to your new shade of teeth. It is important to talk to us about teeth whitening at the start of any treatment because existing restorations cannot be ‘whitened’.
Home whitening
You may decide to whiten your teeth at home, with your dentist’s support. While this is not as effective as in-surgery treatment it is an economical option. This involves the dentist taking impressions of your teeth and making individual whitening trays. These are used at home with a whitening gel. These vary in strength and you can chose to a day whitening, or night whitening (while you sleep) option.
